Reasons why Students should apply for Internships

--

When we talk about internships students sometimes become a bit indecisive on deciding whether or not to take an internship. When you are only but a fresh graduate with no work experience, internships and apprenticeships are your options. We gain a lot from internships and work placements. They are often the best option for you because you want to get a feel for work without been thrown into the deep end labour market straight away and this provides you with the opportunity to learn and grow.

Reasons you should take the Internship and feel great about your decision:

1. To acquire the experience:

You lack experience and this is the only way to get it. The best experience comes from internships because you get to do a bit of everything. You get to see and experience different roles that people play in certain companies and see working life from different perspectives. This is good to take into to working world with you because at times, you will be asked to do various tasks involving various elements of the company. This way, you would have already had a go at things and understood how to multitask. As a fresh graduate, you may get requirements that stipulate 5 years of working experience as a condition precedent for employment. But with an internship, you have a work experience to speak for you.

Internship, in essence, shows that you are proactive and that you are enthusiastic about work, and this is what potential employers want to see.

Potential employers are even more impressed when you have interned in competitive/hard to get top-tier law firms. It shows you get what you want notwithstanding the price or competition. Even personally, it will make you feel good and confident, such that you will be able to beat your chest and claim that unemployment is not your problem, I have got my ways and they are working.

2. To have a better understanding of your profession:

An internship allows you to take time and understand your role and tasks in the industry you wish to delve into. An internship enables you to leave the university knowing more than you came with, knowing it both practically and theoretically.

You can try out new skills and tools without the pressure of being wrong. Internships are a time to experiment, and people you hire you for that position knows that. They expect you to learn from your mistakes and use this as a motivation. With an internship, you get a better shot at the things you were not great at before. You also get to take these new ideas and skills to your next job and find a way to incorporate them into any tasks given to you.

3. Building Confidence:

Whether it be public speaking, giving presentations or simply suggesting new ideas, internships will build your confidence which allows you to grow as a worker and a person. Confidence is key because if you do not believe in yourself, who will? internships will help you build confidence through practice which will also help in your personal growth. after all, practice makes perfect apart from that, when you intern with top tier firms, you get to build your interpersonal skills and personal contact on a much wider terrain. you get to relate with students from other countries, network and learn new cultures.

4. To Communicate:

internships require you to work both individually and within a team. This will make you communicate with people and as well build professional working relationships with people of all ages.this is great because it allows you to open to other people’s ideas and get creative in a team in order to build better ideas and ultimately build a better company.

5. Networking:

Internships often give you the opportunity to attend meetings and events by interacting with professionals, you gain new connections and learn how to communicate in a professional environment.

6. Resume Building:

As college students, we all know the importance of a powerful CV. Without a tougher resume, it would be difficult to be considered for a position. And how can you have a stronger resume without an experience? internships are key to building experience as a student or recent graduate. Employers are much more likely to employ someone with internships and work experience rather someone with a generic resume lacking experience.

7. Hands on the job or firsthand experience:

Joining a company as an intern gives you the opportunity to work hands-on in a professional environment. As an intern, you are not just there to get coffee or run errands but you are there to gain actual work experience. Internships help by teaching you more about the career path you are pursuing. think of it like this- internships are a way to test-drive possible jobs and explore different career options. in fact, it is after interning that you will be to say for example, if Law is your forte or Accountancy is your passion.

It will enable you to make your decisions and tell your self solidly whether you would love to practice that profession or try out something else, especially if you had failed to blend or gel with the roles assigned to you. it is also an opportunity for you to further assure yourself that your profession is actually what you were cut out for. it strengthens your passion for it and makes you visualize yourself in a corporate setting even while you are back in school and attending lectures.

it fine tunes your exuberances and dispositions in school or any other corporate place and makes you relate with your classmates and contemporaries at large with more self-confidence and personal authority

8. Time management

As an intern, you will become a master of time management. When you are working in a fast-paced professional environment, you need to know every minute counts. time management is vital in every circumstance whether you are attending meetings, finishing tasks on deadlines, making phone calls etc. Internships will teach you how to multi-task and yet produce effective results.

At least in school, you don't get to wake up by 4 am to prepare for classes or leave your hostel or lodge by 5:30 am to get to class or even arrive as late as 10 pm when traffic frowns at you.

9. Internship builds your career foundation:

Internships provide you with the building blocks you need for your future. Many internships opportunities help set the foundation for your career. It is important that you choose your internships based on your interests and career prospects. As an intern, you have the opportunity to get your foot in the door with a company. Keep in mind, employers often use internships as a recruitment tool to test out future employees and in many cases, companies hire interns after graduation. Internships are great tools to improve your chances as a job applicant and help make you a better potential employee. So make the investment in your career and look into becoming an intern first.

However, whether an internship is paid, for credit, unpaid or not for credit, it doesn't change its value. internships are investments in your future. often, students are reluctant to pursue internships because they worry they will be stuck doing menial tasks like getting coffee or making copies. Let's face it, no one wants to want to work for free. The truth is, although not all internships pay in cash, some pay in other ways.
